3:29 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins) has entered the room.
3:29 PM: SteveB(Ins) has entered the room.
3:29 PM: SteveB(Ins): hi, pj
3:30 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi Steve
3:30 PM: SteveB(Ins): i think faye was confused as to which "room" we were in
3:31 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hopefully she will call if she can't find it.
3:32 PM: SteveB(Ins): she just emailed us all, so i replied with the right room
3:33 PM: Faye(Ins) has entered the room.
3:33 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): HI Faye
3:33 PM: SteveB(Ins): hi, faye
3:34 PM: Faye(Ins): Hi PJ and Steve
3:34 PM: Julie has entered the room.
3:34 PM: SteveB(Ins): hi, julie
3:34 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): isHI Julie
3:34 PM: Julie: Hi all -
3:34 PM: Faye(Ins): Hi Julie
3:35 PM: ymmt(Ins) has entered the room.
3:36 PM: SteveB(Ins): is everyone here?
3:37 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I think Mike is supposed to be hear as well but we can get started
3:37 PM: Faye(Ins): I think so. Did everyone take a look at the EALC 1021 syllabus?
3:37 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I did
3:37 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I looked at it
3:38 PM: Faye(Ins): I would like to just hear some general impression and problems that you
noticed.
3:38 PM: Julie: Took an overview skim -
3:38 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Let me get it back out
3:39 PM: SteveB(Ins): i did too (looked at the syllabus)
3:39 PM: Faye(Ins): As you can see it's an introductory course with 120 students. Very difficult to
teach, particular when we cover China and Japan in one semester.
3:39 PM: SteveB(Ins): lots of contemporary film and graphics we could incorporate into CULearn,
I'll bet
3:39 PM: SteveB(Ins): yes, lots of material, i'll bet
3:40 PM: Faye(Ins): Instructors who take on this course tend to get low FCQ, so we are trying to
revempt the course, make some changes and bring in pedagocial technologies to liven up the
course.
3:40 PM: Mike Z: Hi everyone -- I made it in!
3:40 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I bet it is hard who do you decide what to leve out
3:40 PM: Mike Z: Hi everyone
3:41 PM: SteveB(Ins): hi, julie
3:41 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi Julie do you see my post?
3:41 PM: ymmt(Ins): hi
3:41 PM: Julie: nope -
3:41 PM: julie: keeps logging me out!
3:41 PM: SteveB(Ins): faye, do you have any performances that you have recorded?
3:42 PM: SteveB(Ins): on film or audio?
3:42 PM: Faye(Ins): yes, I would like to use a lot of film and audio material so I need to know how
to incoporate that.
3:43 PM: julie: not sure how long I'll stay linked here...I keep getting a log out message that says the
sysystem logged me out because I logged in at another browser, but I didn't! ???
3:43 PM: Mike Z(Ins) has entered the room.
3:43 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Julie Hopefully you will see everything from this point on. Soem times if
you try to do something like check email on a mac it will log you out if you are not using the most
uptodate web browser.
3:43 PM: SteveB(Ins): if there are short clips you'd like to "grab" from any movies or performances,
it's easy to "grab" them and use them in PowerPoints or CULearn
3:43 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Hi People
3:43 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi Mike
3:43 PM: SteveB(Ins): hi, mike
3:43 PM: julie: hey Mike
3:43 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Hi!
3:44 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Is there a way to viw what I missed while trying to find chat 11?
3:44 PM: Faye(Ins): for example, I really like this clip and would like to show it to class, how can I
do that?
3:44 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Do we know what the storage capacaty of CU Learn for a single course is
this year?
3:45 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi Mike I don't know if the chat log is avalable until the chat is done, but
i do have a log running.
3:45 PM: SteveB(Ins): 750MB in any given course, plus 4GB in one's main CULearn folder
3:45 PM: Faye(Ins): http://www.videofanstastica.com/view_video/31903/
3:45 PM: SteveB(Ins): a lot of videos are online (YouTube/GoogleVideo) already, though, so they
can be embedded
3:46 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Wow -- what a lot of diff discussions are going on!
3:46 PM: SteveB(Ins): i think the URL was pasted wrong...try this:
3:46 PM: SteveB(Ins): http://www.videofantastica.com/view_video/31903/
3:47 PM: SteveB(Ins): that video can be embedded in a webpage (CULearn)
3:47 PM: SteveB(Ins) has left the room.
3:47 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): We lost Steve.
3:48 PM: Faye(Ins): Please forgive me, but I don't know how to "embed" something into a website
(which I don not have)
3:48 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I got to the web page but i can not get it to play.
3:48 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Embeding videos into web pages is something we could cover in the
course.
3:49 PM: SteveB: oops...got kicked out. anyhow, i just embedded that very video on the homepage
of the GTP3 CULearn page
3:49 PM: SteveB: kicked out again
3:50 PM: Faye(Ins): That's great. Instead ofgoing right into the real technological stuff, can we get
back to the syllabus and let me tell you what I want to do with the course?
3:50 PM: SteveB: sure
3:50 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Sonds good.
3:51 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): JulieABOUTTOGIVEUP, I will talk to soem peapel and see if we cna fix
the problum. Can you let me know what platform PC MAC you are using and what web browser?
3:51 PM: Faye(Ins): I am thinking about designing the course into several modules with specific
topics. I am also interested in designing/incoporating things such as interactive maps,
prrnounciation guide; list of dynasty and reign names, etc
3:51 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Sorry about the spelling.
3:51 PM: SteveB: i'm getting kicked out a lot too
3:52 PM: SteveB: i may have to log out and in again
3:52 PM: SteveB: faye, that sounds great
3:52 PM: Faye(Ins): Other ideas such as timeline (history, literature, theater)
3:52 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): How long are you thinking each Module will be?
3:52 PM: SteveB: i know you can embed interactive maps with google maps
3:53 PM: SteveB: you could also do a pronunciation guide in culearn
3:53 PM: Faye(Ins): I am responsible for the Japan portion of the class, so I will want to work on
that first, which is about half of the semester 8 weeks.
3:53 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins) has entered the room.
3:54 PM: Faye(Ins): Within that 8 weeks, I may want to have about 6 topics/modules
3:54 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Faye, Aside from a lot of matereal in a really short time what do you
think is the bigest chanleng with teaching this course?
3:55 PM: SteveB: here's an example of a map you can embed in a webpage or create on google:
3:55 PM: SteveB: http://www.buffalobicycleclassic.com/lil_buff.html
3:55 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Nice use of maps.
3:56 PM: SteveB: google makes it easy
3:56 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): cool!
3:56 PM: Faye(Ins): How do you tak a look at the site that Steve posted? I got log out of the room
when I clicked it
3:56 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): can't believe I DIDN'T!?
3:57 PM: SteveB: we can also do flyovers with google earth like this:
3:57 PM: SteveB: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-6982153837091861830&hl=en
3:57 PM: SteveB: julie, i was just able to click the link
3:57 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Faye what web Browser are you using?
3:58 PM: SteveB: the quality of the google earth flyover video could be better, but i was rushed so i
just got it "out there"
3:58 PM: ymmt(Ins): it won't let me just click the link, either
4:00 PM: SteveB: strange...
4:00 PM: Faye(Ins): I will have to figure out these mapsites later. Going back to PJ's question, the
biggest chellenge is to cover a lot of material in a very short time, trying not to overwhelm the
students, to keep the material clear and interesting.
4:00 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): what I was saying is that, for the first time today, I WAS able to
just click... it doesn't seem to be automatically logging me out anymore!
4:01 PM: SteveB: i think the best thing to do is to think of what you'd like to do without considering
a specific technology. then, you can ask your friendly neighborhood technology coordinator if what
you want to do is possible
4:01 PM: Faye(Ins): Firefox
4:01 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): amazing stuff with the flyover steve!
4:01 PM: SteveB: great, julie!
4:01 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): Faye and ymmt - TRY CLOSING ANYTHING ELSE THAT IS
OPEN ON YOUR COMPUTER....
4:02 PM: SteveB: i meant "great" that you could log in, that is
4:02 PM: SteveB: ah the perils of live chat
4:02 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): indeed!
4:02 PM: Faye(Ins) has left the room.
4:03 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins) has entered the room.
4:03 PM: SteveB: oops...their dropping like flies
4:03 PM: SteveB: "they're" that is
4:04 PM: Mike Z(Ins): I would like to hear some discussion (here or live, on Friday) about the goals
of this medium. When does it work best? How can we best use it? These are probably some good
answers to these Q's.
4:04 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi I'm back I asadently opend photoshop and it crashed my coputer
with everthing else i had open.
4:04 PM: ymmt(Ins): i 've closed it....still can't click the linck...
4:04 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): Faye- I started to type all this earlier, got logged out, and so I'll
try it again... overall, I think your syllabus is good: info-packed, concise, and nice to look at.... And...
4:04 PM: SteveB: i can email the link...
4:04 PM: SteveB: can you copy and paste it?
4:04 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I think we lost Faye
4:05 PM: Faye(Ins) has entered the room.
4:05 PM: ymmt(Ins): can't copy and paste, either....
4:05 PM: Faye(Ins): Hi, I'm back but seems to have lost all the previous communications
4:05 PM: SteveB: mike, i use IM (chat) for corresponding with colleagues and family. it's good for
short interactions that are by definition informal and not crucial
4:05 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Hi Faye welcome back, Here we see eone of the problumes with
technology.
4:06 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): ONe comment I would have is, I wonder if there is a way to
combine the TEXT section and the various SCHEDULES so that you are only listing the
dates/weeks once, each with the corresponding readings and in class activities for each class
period? Make sense?
4:06 PM: SteveB: like a calendar?
4:06 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): well - not necessarily...
4:06 PM: SteveB: a list that interweaves it all?
4:07 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): the current narrative format is fine...but just putting the
readings and the class topics under each date.
4:07 PM: Faye(Ins): That's a good idea. My class mostly involve lecture (3 hours) and the TA will do
the recitations. But I want more activities that I can do in class too
4:08 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): ...not having a section for TEXTs with dates, and a separate
section for SCHEDULE with the same dates.
4:08 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Faye, the previuse chat text is recorded in the log but you only "see"
what hapens form the point at which you log in.
4:09 PM: Faye(Ins): So where can I go to see the log?
4:09 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Steve do you know were the log is stored? If not I will find it and email a
link to everyone.
4:10 PM: Faye(Ins): That will be great, I need the info on the map pages
4:11 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Faye, Do you have any ideas about what activaties you would like to do? I
am assuming you mean in class activaties.
4:12 PM: SteveB: i think it's stored in the "My Files" area, so long as the logging feature's been
enabled
4:13 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I would think you could build the Modles you were talking about around
them. Staert with a lecter, have an activaty, then a summary discusion session and assesment.
4:13 PM: Faye(Ins): For example, the interactive map that I mentioned before. Perhaps I can use it
in lecture and also use it as an quick review at the end of the class?
4:13 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I like that.
4:14 PM: Faye(Ins): Yes, PJ, that is what I want is to incoporate lecture, activities, and discussion
that deal with the specific topic for that week
4:14 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): You could use the interactive map with soem viedo clips to show the
students historical sites and were they are.
4:15 PM: Faye(Ins): I have to think more about how to organize the big topics: history; geography;
culture; performance etc and small sub-topics under that
4:16 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): I would think visual would be a very important, very big part of
this course...
4:16 PM: Faye(Ins): I like the map with video clips idea; perhaps this will be the first thing to work
on?
4:16 PM: SteveB: quite doable
4:16 PM: SteveB: i used google's "My Maps" feature, which requires a Google account (free)
4:17 PM: Faye(Ins): Definately, visual is impoartant. I use power point a lot in the lecture on Ukiyo-prints but any other ideas?
4:17 PM: SteveB: you can embed photos or video
4:17 PM: SteveB: google's maps wouldn't embed in a powerpoint, tho. you'd have to go online
4:17 PM: Faye(Ins): The possibility is infinate, now only if I can figure out how to actually do it
4:17 PM: SteveB: i'm happy to help, if you'd like
4:18 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Faye, if you could think up/decise on one or two of the topics for these
modles we could proubuly help you work on building it so that you can see how it is done.
4:18 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): A project for you to work on in the class.
4:18 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): Very lucky you have Steve to help... Mr. TECH!! A Million Dollar
Man these days, no doubt!
4:18 PM: SteveB: very kind, but actually he is very, very tired these days. still willing to help,
though.
4:19 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Mike I think we will get to your questions about the uses/purpse of on
line chat next time.
4:19 PM: SteveB: i think Yahoo IM, Apple's Chat, and Google Talk all work much better than
CULearn's chat
4:19 PM: Faye(Ins): I am very excited and grateful. I don't think I can do everything I want in this
short course, but at least like to have one or two projects done, with all your help, of course.
4:19 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Thanks, PJ -- I just want to understand how chat fits into the bigger tech-in-ed picture
4:20 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): A few thoughts: with Steve's help... either "embed" or just "show
at the right moment... perhaps poetry being read, an actual recent art exhibit on location, I'll think
of more..
4:20 PM: SteveB: faye, i think your strategy is right on the money: take your time learning these
things
4:20 PM: SteveB: it can get overwhelming
4:20 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): I think we should try out soem of the other chat programs so that we can
see I think you are right steve about them working better though.
4:20 PM: SteveB: sure
4:21 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): We have rechaed the end of our aloted time i think we are off to a good
start. Thanks For login on.
4:21 PM: Mike Z(Ins): This was fun. See you all Fri
4:21 PM: SteveB: thanks, PJ
4:21 PM: SteveB: See y'all Friday
4:22 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins): Thanks for getting us stated Faye
4:22 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins): went fast! Bye, ya'll!!! -til Friday
4:22 PM: ymmt(Ins): thanks, ciao
4:22 PM: julieSTILLTRYING(Ins) has left the room.
4:22 PM: ymmt(Ins) has left the room.
4:22 PM: Faye(Ins): Bye! Thank you all for your input.
4:22 PM: SteveB: ??) i
4:22 PM: SteveB: is that right?
4:22 PM: Faye(Ins): Steve, you know Chinese?
4:22 PM: SteveB: oops...chinese..
4:23 PM: SteveB: i tried taking chinese
4:23 PM: Faye(Ins): that was impressive!
4:23 PM: SteveB: that one I googled
4:23 PM: SteveB: :D
4:23 PM: Faye(Ins): Next time I shall speak to you in Chinese
4:23 PM: SteveB: i won't get past "hello" :)
4:23 PM: Faye(Ins): Sayonara, then.
4:24 PM: SteveB: Sayonara, indeed
4:24 PM: Faye(Ins) has left the room.
4:24 PM: SteveB has left the room.
4:25 PM: Mike Z(Ins): Bye-bye
4:25 PM: Mike Z(Ins) has left the room.
4:32 PM: PJ Bennett(Ins) has left the
